Movie Reviews
________________________________________________________________
I saw 3 movies this weekend...so here are some brief reviews of: Little Children, Babel, and Stranger than Fiction...no spoilers. Little Children
From Todd Field, director of "In the Bedroom" and creepy piano-playing friend in "Eyes Wide Shut" comes this interesting story of 2 married folks with kids having an affair and the sex offender who lives in their neighborhood. I was very entertained and thoroughly drawn in during the first hour...maybe even the first 90 minutes. But at almost 2.5 hours long, this movie dragggged towards the end. The story could have been just as easily told in 2 hours or less. And the ending left much to be desired. At the end I was left wondering "why did I just sit through this??". Still, the acting is good, and like I said, the first hour or so is quite enjoyable. And most importantly, Patrick Wilson is a hottie! Babel Another downer of a movie that was much longer than it needed to be. To say this is one of Brad Pitt's best acting jobs isn't really saying a lot, but nonetheless, he is good with the material he's given. This movie reminded me a little bit of Traffic...several inter-connecting plots, but it jumps around too much and drags on too long. But I'd still want Brad Pitt to carry me in his arms if I was ever shot by a stray bullet.
Stranger than Fiction This is a movie I had pretty high expectations for. Overall, it did not disappoint. It's fresh and original, entertaining and somewhat funny. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Will Ferrell, and Dustin Hoffman all give very good performances. However, the ending was lacking a bit. Why is it so hard for Hollywood to come up with a satisfying ending that isn't cliche? Is it oscar worthy? I dunno about that. Ferrell's character didn't quite have the range I would expect for an Oscar nomination, but if there aren't too many contenders this year, I could see him being nominated. Labels: babel, brad pitt, cate blanchett, dustin hoffman, kate winslett, little children, maggi gyllenhaal, patrick wilson, stranger than fiction, todd field, will ferrell
